A MAN CALLED POSSUM - OUTBACK RIVER EXPERIENCE
Possum (David James Jones) is a legend who has been documented in a book ‘A Man called Possum’ by Max Jones. ‘Possum’ was a New Zealand Shearer, who turned his back on society and lived a lonely existence along the Murray River, living off the land for nearly 60-years. We will explore (stash sites) where his body was found and the cemetery where he was buried. Passengers will each received the book ‘A man called Possum’ included in the tour.
Depart Renmark at 8:00am and cruise to Chowilla Station Shearers Quarters for morning tea. Cruise through lock 6, enjoy picnic lunch onboard. Continue through lock 7 after crossing the Victorian & New South Wales border and tie up at Ned’s Corner Station for overnight accommodation. Comfortable ‘Shearers Quarters’ with shared facilities – enjoy campfire with camp oven cooking.
After a hearty breakfast cruise up through lock 8 calling in on the Victorian riverbank to view the plaque where ‘Possums’ body was found, followed by a visit to the cemetery where he was later buried. Dinner, Bed & Breakfast at Ned’s Corner Station.
After breakfast cruise back to Renmark visiting the ‘Woolshed Brewery’ for a tour, tasting & lunch. Cruise concludes at the Renmark wharf. On booking we will post passengers out a copy of the book ‘A Man Called Possum’ to read prior to departure.
